user testing

User testing is the sharpest tool for assessing and improving the performance of your site or system.

I offer user testing services which centres on real people, performing real tasks - observing what they actually do - real actions, real evidence, not opinions.

I can uncover where they have problems, and their attitudes to you and your service by performing 1-on-1 individual testing.

By designing specific tests with clear goals, I have a clearly defined framework for observing people performing realistic tasks under realistic circumstances.

Testing to find usability problems (so we can fix them) usually only requires 5-6 people per target user group to perform a qualitative test. If you are looking for conclusive statistics to measure against, rather than an indication, I can run tests with more participants if required.

Testing normally takes around one hour per participant and in the region of 4-6 participant sessions per day.

Testing can take place at your offices, or in the field using my mobile equipment.

If required, I can record the sessions with a set of camcorders, permitting compelling and persuasive video highlights presentations to be made.

I can advise you on the most appropriate use of testing in order to maximise your return on investment - this is all part of the consultancy.

You will receive:

  • Raw data:
    • Profiles of tested users.
    • Qualitative and quantitative test data.
    • Edited audio and video tape (as appropriate).
    • User comments and completed questionnaires.
  • Analysis:
    • Full details and results of the analysis applied to the collected data.
    • All summary data in electronic format.
    • All summary figures in electronic format.
    • Reports - high impact visual reports - intended to be used rather than weighed:
    • Summary of the test results - 'executive summary'.
    • Outline of all usability issues. Severity ratings of usability issues.
    • Prioritised practical recommendations for change - based on severity and ease of implementation.
    • Face to face presentations and workshops, if required.
    • Ongoing support to see through the changes, if required.
