Touch screens and kiosks

Although kiosks are becoming increasingly visible in every day life, for many they remain a device shrouded in mystery.

It is critical that users can find the information they want quickly and efficiently so that they are encouraged to use them again. Being stumped by a system, flashing stark warnings as you try to complete the transaction, whilst a queue of people develops behind you, is never a pleasant user experience!

Many organisations are using the touch screen platform for the first time and whilst they may be aware of the environmental and user issues associated with it they may not know how to accommodate them within the design.

The ergonomics of using touch screens on a repetitive basis is an important consideration if work-related upper limb disorders are to be avoided.

As part of the improvement process, I create a representation of your system using wireframes, which are mock-ups of individual interface screens.

As well as modelling the concepts, my wireframes also consider the touch screen system's intended content, intended audience, scenarios of use and technical constraints. These prototypes are created using tools such as Visio, Excel or Powerpoint.

Each element in the wireframe is verified by employing specialised techniques, to elicit user feedback on the developing user centred design. The wireframe is constantly revised based on this feedback and any necessary design modifications are made. Throughout this process the technical feasibility of the proposed solution is constantly monitored.
